Democrats back Kamala Harris as Joe Biden quits presidential race

President Joe Biden announced that he will be quitting for re-election in the 2024 presidential race. This decision came after a challenging debate with former president Donald Trump. Biden’s performance raised concerns about his ability to continue serving effectively. Biden, who is 81 years old, decided it was best for the country and his party to step aside and focus on completing his current term. 

Vice president Kamala Harris has been endorsed by Biden to run for president in his place. She is now the favourite to receive the democratic party’s nomination at their convention in August. 

Harris, who would be the first ever woman and the first person  of south Asian descent to become president if elected. She commended Biden’s decision as a self sacrificing and patriotic act. She affirmed to work hard to unite democratic party and defeat Trump. 

This announcement has dramatically changed the race for the white house, especially since Biden was already leading in the democratic primaries, having won the majority of delegates. 

Biden’s decision came after pressure from his party and supporters who were worried about his age and health. His debate performance had added to these concerns, as he struggled to respond effectively to trump.

In addition to the primary results, Biden’s announcement means Harris will need to quickly organize her campaign, secure support from delegates and choose a running mate. She has already received endorsement from key figures and groups within the democratic party. These includes the Congressional Black Caucus and former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Former president Barack Obama has also praised Biden’s decision, although he has not yet officially endorsed Harris. Many other important prominent democrats have shown support for Harris, emphasizing the importance of unity in the party to ensure a victory against trump. 

Republicans including Trump criticize Biden, questioning his fitness for office. Trump has stated that Biden was not fit to run for president. As the election approaches, the democratic party faces the challenge of allying around Harris. They’re convincing voters of her ability to lead, and defeat Trump. Biden’s decision to step down is a historic and significant moment in American politics, marking the end of his long career in public service and setting the stage for a highly competitive presidential race.
